Bio-District

Biodistretto del Chianti identifies itself with the AIAB Bio-districts definition and guidelines and is part of a wider national and European network whose main goal wich aims is to promote organic farming by encouraging it in vocated territories. From the very beginning the Chianti territory played a key role in the project, thanks to the presence of pioneer organic farmers and innovative experts who supported in the last years a fast transition from conventional to organic agriculture in the Chianti area.

Local administrations cooperate with a resolution to support the Biodistretto del Chianti project and undertake virtuous processes as green public procurement, introduction of organic food in school and collective catering, avoid use of pesticides and herbicides in urban green, public areas and roads, increase of waste recycling and supporting the use of biodegradable materials as dishes and glasses in public events.

Biodistretto del Chianti farming methods go beyond organic certification requirements promoting a necessary cultural growth toward organic farming and agroecology. The project has grown from a bottom-up movement, thanks to the diligence, passion and partnership of organic farmers, citizens and citizen associations, advisors and Chianti’s local administrations. Every player is essential and contributes to the diffusion of organic and environmental culture.
