Organic Farming

Biodistretto del Chianti promotes organic farming in its meaningfulness, as an instrument to achieve a sustainable model by modifying both production and consumption models.
Organic farming is a production system that preserves natural resources excluding over exploitation of resources, to follow a renewable development in time.
Organic farming is characterized by the lack in use of chemicals (pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers) allowing only the use of natural means of production, the strict rules on animal welfare, the biodiversity and soil protection are basic elements of production. In addition, organic agriculture takes responsibility in social and ethics, promoting awareness in consumers as well as productors. Organic farmers are forced to follow the organic production specifications and are controlled and certified throughout the supply chain.
Presently the European union regulates organic farming though Reg. (CE) 834/2007 and 889/2008 dedicating specific chapters to labelling and controls on the organic system, but the law is still in change. At European level it will be soon replaced by Reg. (CE) 848/2018 .
